It has been a great 11 years, but it had to come to an end eventually. Today Microsoft has announced that they will be discontinuing the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 was originally launched in November 2005 and since has sold over 84 millions units. Microsoft did come out and say that the online services for the console will remain online.
In an interview with Phil Spencer he had said
“While we’ve had a good run, the realities of manufacturing a product over a decade old are starting to creep up on us.”Which is why we have decided to stop manufacturing on the new Xbox 360 consoles. We will continue to sell existing inventory of Xbox 360 consoles, with availability varying by country.”
Services like Games With Gold and the Deals With Gold will still be available to the Xbox 360, while the hardware is still covered by Xbox Support. Also the Xbox 360 backwards compatibility marketplace will remain online.
Phil Spencer said “The Xbox 360 helped redefine an entire generation of gaming. I am incredibly proud of all the hard work and dedication that went into the development of the Xbox 360 hardware, services, and games portfolio over the last decade. I am grateful to the fans and their continued passion and support.”
Spencer went on to share some interesting facts and big numbers that Xbox 360 players achieved in the past decade.
- Over 78 billion gaming hours played
- Almost 486 billion Gamerscore achieved
- 27 billion achievements unlocked
- 25 billion hours spent using apps
In November of 2015 Xbox 360 had celebrated it’s 10 year anniversary.
