The Complex is the latest interactive movie from Wales Interactive and sees you play as a scientist trying to understand a bio-terrorist attack.
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Wales Interactive is a studio we have talked about a few times on this site. They are a video game studio probably best known for their work on full-motion video games, or FMV games. FMVs are interactive movies in which you watch scenes unfold and then make choices as if controlling the main character. Previous titles by Wales Interactive we have reviewed include Late Shift and the (in my opinion) somewhat controversial Shapeshifting Detective. Today though we are discussing The Complex; the lastest FMV in the Wales Interactive catalogue.

Story

The story of The Complex takes place in London, in the midst of what seems to be a bio-terrorist attack. Our main character Amy is giving a presentation to investors about a new type of nano-technology she has been developing, which she hopes will help in the medical field. The technology is in the early stages and hasn’t even had human trials yet. She gets called away from the meeting to the news that her nano-technology has been stolen. As well as this a video has emerged online of an employee throwing up blood, and it appears she has the nano-technology inside of her.

The Complex
The entrance to the complex is a long process with many security measures

The employee is transported to The Complex; a super secretive lab in the basement of the organisation for which Amy works. There, teamed up with an old “friend” of hers, they try to deduce what has happened. Why did this woman inject herself with the nano-technology? Is there a way to retrieve it? All of this, along with more mysteries that reveal themselves, make for a highly entertaining story and one that I was happy to play through time and time again to obtain the different endings.

Gameplay

In terms of gameplay, it’s important to remember that FMVs are more interactive movies than they are games. They involve watching a movie and making quick key decisions that will impact the story and the way it progresses. The easiest way to explain it, for those who are unfamiliar, is to liken it to Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.

The Complex
The cues for decision making fits nicely and doesn’t distract the player

There isn’t much gameplay, in the traditional sense. So if you were hoping for a playable movie (in the traditional sense), then, unfortunately, this isn’t the game for you. However, if you were a fan of Bandersnatch or any other Wales Interactive FMV, then you will enjoy this style of “playing”. Even then, if you have never played an FMV before I highly recommend The Complex. It is more like watching a movie, and so may appeal to those of you who enjoy a more casual gaming experience.

The Complex
Rees and Amy have a troubled past, so when an opportunity to slap him presents itself I took it

One thing I will add because I was very happy to see it, was the option to skip scenes you have already viewed by pressing the R button. This made playing through and obtaining all of the endings so much easier. I was very interested in seeing all of the angles of the story, and being able to skip scenes helps greatly.

Visuals & Audio

Visually The Complex is stunning. Everything looks crisp, is well-lit and matches the general aesthetic of a sci-fi movie. You can tell that care and attention was put into the production of this FMV. The same goes the audio. Everything fits perfectly, and personally, I cannot find any way to fault The Complex in these departments.

Upon completion you will see a screen showing you the relationship between Amy and others, as well as a personality type based on your decision making

Overall

The Complex is a well-shot, well-written FMV experience. The story flows well and even left me wanting to experience every ending the game had to offer. This was made easy thanks to the option to skip scenes after completion. For those of you looking to venture into your first FMV or even those of you who enjoy FMVs, The Complex is a must-have.
