In celebration of Sonic the Hedgehog reaching his 25th anniversary, Sega have announced 2 new Sonic games for 2017. Sega announced the games at its San Diego Comic-Con party and gave players a chance to try one of them out. The first game called Sonic Mania re-imagines a range of levels from Sonic’s past and the second is yet untitled but will star stars classic and modern versions of Sonic in a new adventure against Eggman.
Sonic Mania will stick to the roots of the franchise and will feature gameplay and visuals in a 2D style, just like the original Megadrive versions. It will feature levels from a range of Sonic titles as well as adding brand new one’s into the mix. The game will be developed by Sega of America in collaboration with PagodaWest games and will have input from the people behind the mobile ports.
Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka had a few words to say at SDCC:
“Sonic Mania was born out of our fans’ love of the classic Sonic 2D platform games. This type of collaboration is a first for Sega and we hope everyone will be both surprised and delighted by this title. Sonic Mania has been a passion project for the entire team and we look forward to sharing more details about it later this year.”
The second untitled project is a little more mysterious as only a small amount of information was provided. The untitled game will be from the Sonic Team and will feature both classic and modern iterations of the iconic blue Hedgehog, similar to 2011’s Sonic Generations. You can see the launch trailer below.
Both games will be coming in 2017 for PS4 and Xbox One, Sonic Mania will also be coming to PC and the untitled game will also hit the new Nintendo NX.
