Silence has moved Daedalic Entertainment forward from the classic 2D point and click adventure games to the more modern times. Offering an emotional, but thin story, taking place in an interesting representation of the world between life and death.

Silence is a point and click adventure game brought to you by Daedalic Entertainment, which takes you on an intriguing story through the dreamscapes of Silence.

When the game starts you find yourself in a war-torn real word. As sirens wail and planes fly over the town you are introduced to the main characters Noah and his little sister Renie; with Noah getting his little sister back to a bunker as bombs start to drop. After getting to the bunker Noah upsets Renie, and cheers her up with the story of Silence, as told in the games successful predecessor The Whispered World. As Noah finishes what was a tragic story bombs strike the bunker, and Noah wakes up in wrecked bunker and can not find Renie. This is where the real story starts, as you exit the bunker after failing to find Renie and you find yourself in Silence, which explores the space between life and death.

Your first part of the journey is trying to find Renie after seeing her silhouette while working on the first puzzle, this is where you are introduced to another character or creature in the case that is pivotal to story and puzzle solving – a shape-shifting caterpillar called Spot. While you are trying to find Renie, you will find that you are playing as Noah and Spot, who are also soon joined by a none playable character called Kyra – who is a rebel against the False Queen of Silence. You will also find you are placed in control of Renie during this time as well, who is accompanied by another none playable character called Samuel, with him trying to get you back to their camp. The camp is where Noah and Renie are finally re-united, and they set out on their adventure together to through Silence. This is an emotional journey, where you will unfold many mysteries around Noah, Renie and Silence, and the siblings learn the only thing that can save them is the love they for each other.

Silence

Gameplay wise Silence is very much a standard point and click adventure, with more of a cinematic feel to it. You will find that your are given puzzles to solve in each section of the game, some are more challenging than the others. As you would expect with a point and click game not all the situations can be solved in the one area, and you can find yourself moving forward to next area and returning to the previous area in order to solve some of the puzzles. Through out the game you are faced by enemies called Seekers. Where these could have been used to make the game more difficult, these are easily dealt as part of the puzzles. What made me feel that Silence had a more of a cinematic feel to it, was although the puzzles varied in difficulty, I wouldn’t say any were overly difficult to solve and the story moved on. Taking this into account, most players will find the game can be cleared in 5-6 hours. The puzzles can also be made easier if you have enabled hints in the options, if this is done pressing L3 will highlight everything that can be interacted with and provide a hint at the top of the screen.

Visually Daedalic Entertainment have created a beautiful world in Silence, mixing a great art style with music to help build a feeling for the world you are exploring. While The Whispered World was very much a classic 2D point and click in visual style, this time Daedalic Entertainment have moved with the modern style, and presented you with 3D character models, within lovely presented environments, using clever camera work in order to still offer the feel of a classic point and click adventure. This new direction they have taken with Silence, also adds to why I feel the game offered very much the cinematic feel. In a little way the world of Silence reminded me of the 1986 movie Labyrith, with a more bright colour palate and less a maze.

Silence

Apart from the simple nature of the puzzles presented within Silence, I found another couple of issues with the game; the story wasn’t really fleshed out, and apart from Noah and Renie you never really got enough of back story of the other characters you encounter in Kyra, Samuel and Janus to really connect to them. Both of these really go hand in hand, they could have added more to the story by offering more interaction with these characters and getting to know them better, also making for a longer experience in the game.

Silence gives you what you would expect from point and click adventure games, but some more difficult puzzles along the way, would have made it that much more of an enjoyable gaming experience – and not feel more like a cinematic experience. But, the world of Silence is presented beautifully with its mix of both 3D and 2D art, and this is very much the stand out part of the game.

However, the simple nature of the puzzles, and the lack of development of characters outside of Noah and Renie hinder the game.
