Prey Dev Gives Insight To New Title

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Earlier this year at E3, Bethesda revealed Prey, a new game from Arkane studios that shares a name with an existing Bethesda title. This caused some confusion with players questioning whether this is a sequel, a remake or a reboot. The short answer is, it’s none of them.

Director Raphael Colantonio said in the Gamespot video below:

“Prey is not a sequel. It’s not a remake. It has no tie with the original. You have to look at it like a re-imagining of the idea.”

The original 2006 Prey was a first-person shooter following Cherokee garage owner Tommy, as he navigated a giant Alien ship in search of his girlfriend Jen. What made the game unique was its use of portals and variable gravity. Tommy was able to use portals to travel quickly from place to place as well as firing through them as a tactical advantage. Special pathways throughout the game allowed Tommy to walk along the walls and ceilings and small planet-like areas had their own gravity, allowing Tommy to walk all the way around them.

Colantonio mentioned the new gameplay in the same video:

“Prey is not just shooting. It’s more like a hybrid game where there’s narrative mixed with action mixed with a little bit of [an] RPG layer.”

There will be combat in the new title with the lead character using powers gained from aliens in addition to traditional weapons. The game will take place on a space station where scientists are working so there will be gadgets that are not designed for combat but will serve a purpose.

Prey will be coming in 2017 and you can see the full reveal trailer here.
