As reported by Eurogamer, an organised scalper group claims to have managed to obtain 2000 PS5s following their re-stock at UK retailer GAME. The scalpers boasted on Twitter that they had successfully obtained the PS5s, which had just been restocked. They even added that it becomes “easier every time”. This account has since gone private, following a backlash from genuine potential buyers.
Posts from members of the scalping ring are still available online, gloating about the fact they can resell the high-demand console for a huge profit. Some explained that due to the current pandemic, and having lost their jobs, they turned to this as a means to make money and pay bills. While this is a horrible situation to hear, it still doesn’t excuse the predatory behaviour of scalping.
In a statement to Eurogamer, a GAME spokesperson claimed that the company had “strong measures” in place to tackle these scalpers. They stated that these PS5 pre-orders are just that: pre-orders. They must yet be checked and confirmed by GAME.
“All pre-orders are subject to automatic checks and order updates such as cancellations following these checks take place after a customer will have received a valid order confirmation email. At the present time these orders are still pre-orders and as such no payments have yet been taken from customers. Payments will commence once our order checks have been completed.”GAME spokesperson to Eurogamer
It seems that the saga of the scalper isn’t over just yet. Although there is light at the end of the tunnel. Given that Very managed to halt the sale of 1000 Xbox Series Xs to scalpers it seems that this battle is not over yet. But it does beg the question; Can the scalpers be stopped at all? I’m assuming these consoles will be put back into stock, but how do we manage to stop the scalpers a second time? Or third time? We’ve reached out to GAME for comment and will update you with any news!
