It was announced yesterday that Eidos-Montreal (the team behind the Deus Ex franchise), Open Bionics (the award winning robotics start-up), Razer and Intel have all teamed up to create a fully functioning prosthetic arm based on that of Deus Ex main character Adam Jensen. Open Bionics CEO Joel Gibbard said:
“Working with Deus Ex to re-imagine the future of bionic prosthetics has been a fantastic creative process. It is has been made even better by seeing people wear the bionic arms and get so much enjoyment out of it. This collaboration goes to show how bright the future of bionics is. We feel lucky to have been able to work with the design team at Deus Ex. They’ve been incredibly generous with their time and ideas throughout this project. We’re excited to see this relationship continue to grow.”
Razer are using their Stargazer webcam, with it’s highly advanced tracking technology, to allow everyone to digitally test the arm and “experience first-hand the future of augmentations”. The arms are set to release in 2017, but is available for viewing at multiple events such as E3 and Gamescom. It’s important to note that this project is directed towards those looking for prosthetic limbs, and is in no means looking to augment human limbs.
But the best part? Open Bionics and Eidos-Montreal have revealed that there are two arms; The Titan Arm and The Adam Arm. The blueprints and designs for both are being released royalty free, meaning that anyone who can get access to a 3D printer can create their own arm. More information can be found on the projects site Augmented Future. The trailer is available below.
Yesterday also saw the release of the City-hub gameplay demo for Deus Ex Mankind Divided, which can be found below.
The press release for the trailer states:
“In this section of the game, set in the poor district of the city, Adam Jensen wakes up after being caught in a devastating attack, allegedly perpetrated by augmented extremists, which is causing his augs to malfunction. He needs to see Vaclav Koller, an underground augmentation specialist, so that he can have a look at them and help him get back into shape.”
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is set to release for PS4, Xbox One and PC on August 23rd.
I think this is an awesome project for those who are fans of the Deus Ex series and are looking for a new prosthetic arm. Or if you wasn’t maybe you are now? What do you think of this project? Let us know in the comments below!
