As of today Microsoft has announced that it will release almost one million gamertags later this week. On Wednesday, May 18 any Xbox Live user who has had at least a years worth of Gold status since 2002 can acquire one of the new gamertags. These new gamertags come from older original Xbox accounts that had been abandoned. You can pick one of these gamertags from Xbox.com, inside the Xbox app on Windows 10, or through an Xbox One. Access to these new gamertags will not be available on the Xbox 360, but you can grab one from Xbox.com or Windows 10.
You can change your gamertag once for free, but after that there is a fee. Changing your gamertag doesn’t reset your profile, as all of your achievements and friends will remain intact. The first wave of released gamertags will be available on May 18 at 11 am PST and 2pm EST. The gamertags will not be released all at once, but instead throughout a span of 24 hours “to give fans in various countries an equal chance” Microsoft said. The company says there will be “many great” gamertags available in categories including:
- Types of Food
- Geography and Travel
- Science and Technology
- Math and Numbers
- Pop-Culture References
- Proper Names
These new gamertags will be available on May 18, 2016 at 11am PST and 2pm EST.
