Apple has announced Nintendo are launching a new Mario game for iOS called Super Mario Run.
As the title suggests, the game is an autorunner in which Mario automatically runs from left to right, similar to Rayman Fiesta Run. Player will then have to tap the screen to make Mario jump to collect coins, squash enemies or clear gaps. The aim of the game will be to reach the iconic flagpole as quickly as possible and as the game progresses, power-ups will be available.
At the Apple event, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto had a few words to say about the iconic plumber’s mobile debut:
“For the past 30 years every time Mario has encountered a new platform he has evolved and continued running towards a new goal. Now Mario is running towards his next goal: iPhone. We want as many people as possible to be able to enjoy playing as Mario and they’ll be doing it in a brand new game: Super Mario Run.”
As well as the standard mode, another mode called “Toad Rally” was discussed during the announcement. In this mode, players pick an opponent in an attempt to beat their high scores. Opponents can be online players or friends and this mode has no flagpole, just an unlimited run against the clock.
After the Apple announcement, a press release was released with more words of wisdom on the game from Miyamoto:
“For the first time ever, players will be able to enjoy a full-fledged Super Mario game with just one hand, giving them the freedom to play while riding the subway or my favourite, eating a hamburger.”
