More than 75,000 gamers went to EGX at Birmingham’s NEC to be a part of the best gaming show in the UK.
Hosted in partnership with Virgin Media, the show had over 200 playable games! The biggest advertisement of indie games in the world. It also hosted global first-play exclusive, which included Playtonics Yooka-Laylee and Bethesda’s Dishonored 2.
The UK had some hands-on exclusives, which had the newly announced PlayStation 4 Pro, and games such as Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Gears of War 4, Titanfall 2, Battlefield 1, Final Fantasy XV, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and more – all were pre-release, and playable. Developers now consider EGX as one the most important dates in the UK calendar. That’s because they get the chance to exhibit their latest games and it gives gamers a chance to try them for the first time.
EGX has also become known as a place to reveal new games and features. This year’s show hosted the announcements of new titles from Failbetter Games and Square Enix Collective. It also hosted the announcement of Shovel Knight’s appearance in Yooka-Laylee. More popular elements of the show include multiple eSports stages and tournaments, such as the GFinity $100,000 Counter-Strike: Go invitational and the UK’s only Premier Event on the Capcom Pro Tour. It also had the UK Preliminaries for the European Cosplay Gathering.
The show’s official retail partner Amazon offered super-fast delivery from Prime Now to the people at the show. It was to ensure that gaming fans could instantly purchase or pre-order games and hardware more conveniently than before.
“We’re delighted with the feedback from attendees who loved the introduction of Scan and Buy on the Amazon app for a convenient way to buy and pre-order games and hardware across this leading gaming event,” said Russell Jones, Video Games and Software Category Leader. ”This was the first time we have offered Amazon Prime customers delivery products via Prime Now direct to any event. The service which enabled attendees to order games and consoles was very well received.”
It wasn’t just the gamers that turned up in huge numbers, media attendance also hit record levels. Hundreds of journalist from all kinds of media were at the event. The event also received national coverage from widespread outlets such as BBC, Newsbeat and Newsaround, The Mirror and the Sunday Times. Hundreds of influencers showed up. I’d like to say thank you to all our partners, sponsors and exhibitors for helping create another outstanding experience for UK gamers. And of course I must thank the community for making the event so special. Next year will be the 10th anniversary for EGX and we are already planning to mark that milestone with something even more spectacular.”
